GOUGH’S MEN CLIMBING THE TABLE

The third team travelled to Whiston Forge on Saturday in search of a third straight victory, however in the absence of 5 regular players, they knew they’d have to put in some performance to get the points.

Goughy lost the toss on the hottest day of the year so far and the hosts, unsurprisingly, elected to bat first. That decision looked a poor one from Whiston’s skipper when he was removed for just 2 by Zaheer Mirza in the second over of the game. Another quick wicket fell, leaving the hosts 6-2 with fellow opening bowler Tom Butcher grabbing his first wicket of the afternoon. A fast start however was soon halted by the home sides resurgence, with a partnership of 76 for the third wicket. During which time, we were reduced to ten players through an unfortunate injury to Jake Chapman while retrieving the ball. Tom Butcher, who was battling hard through the heat got the third wicket and Whiston were 82-3. With the introduction of Joshua Hartfield, the hosts failed to score another run with the loss of two further wickets leaving them 82-5. Suddenly, the game looked like it had been tipped on its head. A wicket for the evergreen Steve Dixon left the hosts 94-6 and it looked only a matter of time before the thirds would find the final 4 wickets. However, Whiston’s tail end chipped in with some valuable runs to get them up to 175 all out. Another wicket each for Hartfield, Dixon and Zaheer and the final wicket falling to a calamitous run out from Tom Butcher.

In reply, the thirds lost an early wicket themselves at 11-1. An unlucky wicket which saw Adrianna Darlow fall for just 1 after an excellent catch at square leg. Skipper Alex Gough was joined by Steve Dixon at the crease, however the latter fell for 23. In came debutant Anthony Godley at 4, with the side 54-2. Goughy led from the front in his sides run chase, however would’ve been frustrated to fall for 36, gifting his wicket. Linton Shore joined Godley at 74-3 and he added an important 30 for the side before both himself and Anthony Godley (17) were out. At 133-5 needing 41 to win, it was Ian Norton and Joshua Hartfield to attempt to see the thirds home. Ian added a quick-fire 24 in just 21 balls and Josh a vital 30 from 51 balls. However, just 3 runs short of victory Ian norton was caught out 173-6. In came Tom Butcher and it took him just 1 delivery to finish the game off with a huge straight six. The third game in a row that the thirds have smashed a six to win the game.

Three straight wins for the thirds, sees us sit fourth in the table and building some good momentum. We now look ahead to next weekend and it’s a double header for the thirds. Saturday sees us face Handsworth in the league at Woolley and we’re back in action at Woolley on Sunday against Darfield in the second round of the cup.
