Boeta Beukes’s side dropped to their second loss of the new season, although there were positives to take from the game.
Barnsley’s danger man Owen Smith fell in the first over of the game, pushing at a decent delivery, caught at first slip. Stevie Walters continued his fine form as he then held the innings together. He lost Oliver Bennett for 14, before a 48 run partnership with Sean Whitehead. Once Whitehead fell to a juggling catch at slip, it starred a collapse where Barnsley went from 95 for 2 to 113 for 5. William Nicholson offered support to Walters but was out for 20. Beukes did the same making 26. Walters himself was the next man out for 71 from 131 balls, he was bowled trying to up the tempo. Manny Shinwari managed to get the away side to 228 with a quick fire 20 from 14 balls.
In the field, Barnsley made a great start in reducing Cawthorne to 22 for 3, with wickets for Slatter, Beukes and Whitehead. The first of two century stands then took the game into a precarious position. Harry Allison (74) and Liam Wiles (26) were out in quick succession thanks to a second wicket each for Beukes and Whitehead.
The partnership then that defined the game was between Rizwan Sadiq and Archie Greaves, who made 63 from just 29 balls, including 7 sixes. Rizwan finished unbeaten on 32. The last wicket picked up Barnsley would could be a crucial two extra bonus points.
