WHITWORTH CUP WIN AT COLLEGIATE

Nathan Swift returned to the second team to lead his troops over the line in a tight one at Abbeydale. The Whitworth Cup first round tie went down to the last over as Barnsley secured an eight run victory.

Batting first the away side we’re in trouble at 56 for 5, with Oliver Bennett making 24 from 25 balls. Teenagers William Nicholson and Owen Smith then put on a very mature 46 before Nicholson was stumped for 22. They soon lost Jordan Slattery but Smith continued to be positive alongside Matthew Clayton. They added 39 before Owen was caught in the deep for 44. Matty Clegg added 33 with Clayton, who was out for 33 in the penultimate over, made from 29 balls. Clegg himself finished on 22 not out from 16 balls as Barnsley made 186 from their 40 overs.

Collegiate took the game to the bowlers early in their innings and at 107 for 1 would have been everyone’s favourites, however following a similar trend to the day before, the spinners tied them down and the run rate kept increasing. Three quick wickets brought the game back into the balance. Some fine death bowling from Jordan Slattery saw the home side fall six short of their target and rewarded Barnsley with a home tie with Shiregreen in the quarter finals.
