The third team were missing a few batters on their visit to Cawthorne and it showed as they went down when chasing a modest total of 125.
The visitors got off to a good start and had Cawthorne at 21 for 3 with Callum Bentley and Tom Butcher opening the bowling. A good partnership between Thom Macrow and George Charnock of 96 set them up for a big total. However, the introduction of 13 year old Zaheer Mirza turned the innings in its head. Backed by another 13 year old Max Heseltine, Cawthorne went from 117 for 3 to 124 all out. Zaheer bagging five wickets for three runs in a great spell of seam bowling. It bodes well for his future but Zaheer’s development has been clear for all to see this winter. Max bowling his off spin, finished with two for seven. Great stuff from the youngsters.
Barnsley made the worst possible start with skipper Alex Gough bowled first ball of their reply. At 54 for 1 Barnsley were favourites, but the loss of 15 year old Owen Smith for 30 started a collapse that never subsided. Callum Bailey made 19, the only other player to reach double figures was Tom Butcher with 11 not out. The innings finished on 86 all out to lose by 38 runs.
