An impressive win for Alex Gough’s team as they won by 84 runs at Woolley. Barnby Dunn inserted the home side and got off to a flying start before Ethan Shillito was caught out for 27. Skipper Gough joined Oliver Heseltine and the scoreboard continued to tick along before Gough departed for 12. The highest partnership came after Heseltine was out for a very well made 35. Dairen Hirst-Spalding (15) and Callum Bentley added 54 valuable runs for the fifth wicket. Bentley brought up his half century in the last over from just 37 balls. It left the home side with a good opening day score of 171 for 5.
Barnby Dun were never really in the game due to the imposing bowling of the young Barnsley attack. Zain Ali impressed on debut with 1 for 5 from his five overs. Finlay Parker-Wake struck twice with the new ball, and first change Ollie Chapman-Stott took 2 for 8 from his five overs. The introduction of spin saw the last four wickets wrapped up for just 27 runs as the away team were out in just 21.3 overs for 87. Dairen Hirst-Spalding taking 3 for 23.
The result and performances don’t just bode well for Alex’s team but also the future of so many of these talented juniors.
